It’s been an annual fall tradition in Helen, Georgia for nearly five decades and it’s back! Oktoberfest kicked off its 45th year in the Bavarian-themed “village” on Thursday. A parade was held downtown on Saturday. Roland Berkmuller and his family from Helen’s sister city of Fussen, Germany, served as Grand Marshals (PHOTO/wrwh.com).
History of Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany in 1810. It started as a royal wedding festival honoring Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities lasted almost a week — from October 12-17 — and ended with a horse race.
According to historical accounts, people liked the horse race so much it became an annual event. Over time, attention shifted away from the horse race to fun rides and drinking. Eventually, Oktoberfest expanded into a two-week long festival and was pushed back to start in September for warmer weather.
Today, Munich’s Oktoberfest runs from mid-September through the first weekend in October.
Longest Running Oktoberfest
Helen, Georgia boasts the longest running Oktoberfest in the United States. It runs from mid-September through November 1. It’s been recognized by national media and tourist publications as one of the top Oktoberfest festivals in the country and attracts revelers from all over the world. Festivities take place at the Helen Fest Hall where beer, brats and bands take center stage. This year’s festival will last 52 days.
