Helen Dominy Sikes, a longtime resident of both Laurens and Habersham Counties, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018. She was 94.
Mrs. Sikes was born on August 23, 1923, in Dexter, Georgia, to the late Argene W. and Ida Lee Ellington Dominy. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Matthew Harvey Sikes; infant daughter: Little Helen Sikes; four brothers; three sisters; son-in-law, Glenn Calmes; and sister-in-law, Annette Dominy.
Mrs. Sikes was a 1940 graduate of Dublin High School in Dublin, Georgia. She worked as a practical nurse for a short time at Coleman Hospital. Helen was a member of First Baptist Church of Cornelia, the Three-L Sunday School Class, WMU, Round Table, Business and Professional Women’s Club, and AARP. She volunteered with Helping Hands and Red Cross Blood Drive, as well as delivered Meals on Wheels and drove people to doctor’s appointments in Atlanta. Helen enjoyed traveling, crocheting, making necklaces, and playing games with friends.
Survivors include daughter: Ann Calmes, Homer; son: Tom Sikes, Cadwell; sisters-in-law: Shirley Dominy, of Dublin; brother-in-law: B.H. Claxton, Hazelhurst; grandchildren: Matthew Sikes, Nashville, TN; Suzanne Sikes, Louisiana; Brandie Foster and spouse, Dave, Homer; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia.
A Second Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday, February 19, 2018 at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home, 215 West Jackson Street, Dublin, Georgia 31021.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2018 in the Chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home in Dublin. Interment will follow in Dublin Memorial Gardens.
