The people of Helen, tourists and the city’s Chamber of Commerce celebrated the coming of a New Year at the Festhalle during the 11th Annual Dropping of the Edelweiss Tuesday.

An Edelweiss is a mountain flower that belongs to the daisy or sunflower family.

By 11 p.m., more than 100 people filled the Festhalle, listened to live music, danced and celebrated as the clock ticked toward 12 a.m.

Just before midnight, hordes filed out to the street and watched, cheering as the Edelweiss was lowered from a flagpole.

The celebration continued on into Wednesday morning as those in attendance – and people across the nation – closed out 2024 and flipped to a new chapter ahead in 2025.
