ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Josh Hebrink fired a 1-under 70 to lead Piedmont men’s golf in the first round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate on Friday.
The Lions were off late in an afternoon tee time, and delivered a 305 (+21) team score.
Hebrink was the leader, as the senior stalwart finds himself in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard after his 1-under 70 on Friday. Hebrink was incredibly consistent all day, making 15 pars along with two birdies and a bogey. The two birdies at No. 12 and No. 14 sandwiched the bogey at 13.
Hebrink’s round of 70 was significantly ahead of the rest of the squad, although Piedmont was able to count all four scores in the 70’s.
Freshman Doug Gugel was second best on the day, with a 6-over 77 that included back-to-back birdies at No. 6 and No. 7. Gugel made just one bogey on the day but a triple bogey and a double bogey on his card moved his score into the high 70’s.
Veterans Eric Penland and Connor Lane posted the final two counting scores for the Lions, both coming in with 8-over 79’s that included a single birdie.
Adam Rogers delivered a non-counting 80 on the day.
Rhodes leads on the team side of the board at even par while Lynchburg’s Andrew Watson fired a 4-under 67 to lead the individual side.
Up next, the Lions will be back in action tomorrow morning with the second round of the 54-hole tournament.
