The two drivers involved in a head-on collision Friday on Highway 115 in Demorest remain hospitalized. 29-year-old Blaine Weaver of Demorest was listed in critical condition as of early Monday. 56-year-old Deborah Cook of Cornelia was in fair condition, according to a spokesperson for Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Highway 115 West and Habersham Mills Road. It was reported to Habersham County 911 Dispatch around 3:12 p.m.

Weaver was driving a 2004 Kia Optima on the wrong side of the road when the accident happened, according to Georgia State Patrol TFC Aaron Church of Post 7 in Toccoa.

Church says Weaver was traveling east in the westbound lane. Cook was traveling west in the westbound lane in a 2007 Chevy Tahoe. As the vehicles approached one another, both drivers swerved to avoid hitting the other and ended up colliding head-on.

Both vehicles rotated before coming to a stop in the middle of the highway.

Several witnesses told the State Patrol Weaver passed a vehicle on the double yellow line and continued to stay in the wrong lane until the crash.

Units from Habersham County Emergency Services, Demorest Fire, and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with the Georgia State Patrol.

Emergency responders found both drivers inside their vehicles, according to HCES Director Chad Black. Weaver was trapped. It took 45 minutes to extricate him from the wreckage. He was seriously injured.

Weaver was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) in Gainesville. Cook was transported to NGMC by ambulance.

TFC Church says charges are pending.
