A Demorest woman was killed Monday evening in a two-vehicle crash on GA 105/Cannon Bridge Road. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Sandra Mulkey, 77, of Demorest, died when a Ford F-150 crossed the centerline and struck the Toyota Avalon she was driving head-on.
Mulkey is the wife of former Habersham County Commissioner Lee Mulkey.
The wreck happened in the 2900 block of Cannon Bridge Road near Fairview Elementary School. 19-year-old Rylee Higgins of Cleveland was driving the pickup truck. State troopers say he was southbound at the time of the crash and Mulkey was traveling north. According to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Higgins told officers he was trying to get something from underneath his seat when the crash occurred.
Habersham County E-911 dispatched units to the scene at 5:04 p.m. on January 31. First responders arrived eight minutes later to find the injured Higgins and Mulkey still in their vehicles. Firefighters extricated Mulkey from her vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Habersham EMS transported Higgins to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville in stable condition.
Troopers with Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa are investigating the crash. They say charges are pending.
