Sheriff’s Office issues statement about alleged school threat

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) offers no new information on alleged student threat against HNGA

Editor’s Note: The following news release was issued late Monday afternoon by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office 

“As most are well aware, there was a situation at the Habersham Ninth Grade Academy this past Friday regarding a student making reference to mass casualty and school shooting events.

In respecting the confidentiality of the juvenile process, specifics of the incident cannot be released. In reference to the situation on Friday, it continues to be investigated by the The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, The Habersham County School System and The Demorest Police Department.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, working in conjunction with the Habersham County School System and the Local Police Departments, are taking all school disciplinary, as well as legal, action necessary when incidents like this arise to ensure and maintain a safe school environment for all students, faculty, staff, parents and visitors. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office continues to support the schools system’s “See Something, Say Something” campaign and is working with school administration to evaluate and improve upon school safety procedures and practices.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office will take all threats, real or perceived, seriously and will investigate them and take action on them as promptly as possible. The safety and wellbeing of the public is our top priority. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office does ask that if the public has information concerning any type of public threat that you notify us as soon as possible. These threats are not considered a joke. These types of threats should not be taken lightly because” I know that persons family and he/she would never do something like that”. Notify the local law enforcement agency and let them look into all public/school threats.”
