State School Superintendent Richard Woods has announced the selection of students from a pool of more than 1000 applicants to serve on the 2021-2022 Student Advisory Council, and two of the students are seniors at Habersham Central High School.
Juan Borge Osorio and Molly Butler are among the 66 high school students selected to serve on the council and provide student perspectives and input related to public education in Georgia.
Announcing this year’s council, Superintendent Woods commented, “Year after year, my Student Advisory Council is an invaluable resource as I make decisions that impact students across the state. Getting to know these students and seeking their feedback and perspectives allows all of us at the Georgia Department of Education to make the best possible policy choices.”
Borge is the son of Dilia Borge of Demorest. At Habersham Central, he is a member of the AP Capstone Program and president of the Troupe 4860 Thespian Club. He is also a member of the Student Council, Beta Club, and the Mock Trial team. As an advisory council member, Borge plans to focus on helping eligible students register to vote.
Also enrolled in the AP Capstone Program at HCHS, Butler is the daughter of David and Lara Butler of Clarkesville. She is a member of the varsity Volleyball team, serves as president of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Student Council treasurer, and is captain of the varsity Academic Bowl team. Butler serves as an attorney on the Mock Trial team and is also a member of Key Club and Beta Club. She plans to focus on a student-led tutoring program at the high school.
HCHS Principal Jonathan Stribling praised the students’ selection.
“Juan and Molly are both outstanding Raiders and excellent selections for Superintendent Woods’ Student Advisory Council. Not only are Juan and Molly high achieving in the academic arena, but they also have taken full advantage of the wide range of activities at Habersham Central,” he says. “Both will be valuable contributors on the council and represent Habersham Central well.”
Student Advisory Council members will meet with Superintendent Woods during the 2021-2022 school year to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom.
