It’s the kind of memory-making experience students are missing out on a lot these days. On the same day that Habersham Central High School junior Ege Keskin found out he was a finalist in this year’s Governor’s Honors Program, he also learned the event has been canceled.
On April 28 Gov. Brian Kemp canceled the 2020 Governor’s Honors Program due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event was scheduled to have taken place from June 14-July 11 at Berry College in Rome.
It’s the first time the academic honors program has been canceled since it began in 1964.
Kemp tried to salvage the honor from disappointment by congratulating the students on their significant achievements.
“It is my honor to congratulate this year’s Governor’s Honors Program finalists. Several members of my staff participated in past programs, so I know firsthand about the intelligent and talented individuals who are chosen to participate,” said Kemp. “These finalists are our future leaders, and we celebrate and encourage their continued educational growth. While we are disappointed that these finalists are unable to participate as planned, we look forward to continuing to honor and recognize their accomplishments.”
A “fabulous student”
Keskin is among 659 rising high school juniors and seniors who were chosen as finalists from thousands of nominations received statewide. The program is funded by the Georgia General Assembly to support intellectually gifted and artistically talented students. Ege is a finalist in the area of mathematics.
Brent Tuck, HCHS Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, coordinated the school nominations for Governor’s Honors. In response to Keskin’s selection, she stated, “We are so proud of Ege. He is a fabulous student and a wonderful young man. He does his best every day for every class. His future has endless possibilities.”
Keskin said he was honored to be chosen as a finalist. His nominating teacher, Lisa Barrett, is also excited about the selection. “Ege is an exceptional math student, and I am extremely proud of him.”
“Participation in the Governor’s Honors Program is a life-changing experience, and the selection process is highly competitive. Ege’s outstanding academic achievements and passion for learning exemplify why he is a perfect fit for GHP,” stated Gifted Program Coordinator Martha Cantrell. Principal Jonathan Stribling added, he was “ecstatic” Keskin was selected for the program. “Currently ranked in the top ten of his junior class of 453, Ege is a model student.”
The selection process for finalists in the area of mathematics involved a review of each student’s academic performance, relevant SAT/ACT scores, a student application, teacher recommendation, and an intensive interview.
Plans are underway to publicly honor this year’s GHP students. The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement also plans for the 2021 program to include as many of the 2020 finalists as possible, and will provide students with updates about future developments.
