HCACC offers home pet food deliveries to pet owners in need

With daily operations scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic, Habersham County Animal Care and Control officers are staying busy meeting a rising need in our community.

Today, they launched a pandemic pet food home delivery service to help pet owners who are shut-in due to COVID-19.

Habersham County residents who are sheltered in place and unable to shop due to their age or medical condition may now contact the shelter and request a pet food delivery. “We want to focus on our friends that are in the most need, that are high risk and need to stay home for their safety,” stresses HCACC Director Madi Nix.

Nix and her staff came up with the innovative idea after hosting a recent pet adoption event at Tractor Supply in Cornelia. “They gave us a $200 store gift card,” she explains, “so we used it to buy pet food.”

HCACC officers are bagging up the food and distributing it. They are wearing gloves and masks during the process to protect pet owners and themselves against the virus.

To request a delivery, pet owners may call the shelter at 706-839-0195 during normal business hours. They may also email [email protected] or message Habersham County Animal Shelter on Facebook.

If you would like to donate dog and cat food to the shelter to help with this program, contact Madi Nix.
