Montgomery, AL – The Piedmont College baseball team saw Huntingdon College pull even once again with them at the top of the USA South Athletic Conference standings with the Hawks winning 12-0 today in game two of the three game series.
The contest was a 1-run ballgame through four complete until the Hawks exploded offensively with 11 runs in the final three innings of the 7-inning affair.
The game was shortened to seven due to the USA South 12-run rule as Huntingdon held a 12-run lead with six and a half complete innings in the books after putting up four in the bottom of the 7th.
Getting the loss was freshman Seth George who moves to 1-2 on the year after he went four complete scattering three hits and giving up just one run total with the score coming in the bottom of the first. After the opening frame, George retired five of the next six batters he faced and sat down the side in order in the bottom of the 4th as well.
The win went to Huntingdon’s Zack Watson who moved to an even 2-2 after tossing seven shutout innings giving up four hits throughout. Watson issued four walks and struck out a pair as the Hawks pulled even with PC at 12-5 in the league standings to again force a deadlock at the top of the board.
Zach Langley finished 1-for-2 with a walk to lead PC at the plate as the Lions’ DH was one of two left on in the Piedmont 4th, one of the visitors’ best chances at denting the day for Watson on the mound.
PC again left a pair stranded in the top of the 5th before Huntingdon was able to take control starting with a run in the home half of the inning as Anthony Spivey tripled in Jordan Freeman to put HC up 2-0.
Freeman would later hit a grand slam in a 6-run 6th inning for Huntingdon belting a pitch over the wall in left as the Hawks went to the top of the 7th with now an 8-0 advantage over the Lions.
The Hawks loaded the bases again in the 7th scoring four more runs to shorten the contest, Huntingdon’s 2nd such contest of the season after the Hawks defeated 16-4 back on February 28.
Piedmont moves to 12-5 in USA South action and overall with the loss while Huntingdon is also now 12-5 in league play and 12-6 overall. With each having taken a game in the series so far, the two will face off for the finale with a chance to not only take the series, but earn a advantage in the regular season race to be crowned conference champs.
That third and final game will be played on Monday, March 16 in Montgomery with game time set for 1:00 pm ET, 12:00 pm CT.
