Hatchett again selected Senate floor leader

District 50 State Sen. Bo Hatchett (R-Cornelia)

Governor Brian Kemp has again selected Sen. Bo Hatchett to serve as one of his State Senate Floor Leaders. The Cornelia Republican will share floor leader duties with Sen. Mike Hodges of Brunswick to move the governor’s legislative agenda through the State Senate.

Hatchett represents the 50th District which includes all of Habersham, Rabun, and Towns counties and parts of Banks and Hall. He was first elected in 2020 before new district lines were drawn. He won re-election last year.

Hatchett is Kemp’s only returning State Senate Floor Leader. He recently told the Gainesville Times he was selected because of the close relationship he’s developed with Kemp through the years, saying the two share a number of mutual beliefs on major issues affecting Georgians — like the economy and enacting policies intended to generate jobs.

“Basically, just building off of the relationships I’ve built with the governor and his staff the last two years, they asked me to stay on for another two,” Hatchett said. “It’s kind of neat — I will be the senior floor leader in both chambers now.”

Hatchett said he will continue to use his growing influence at the State Capitol to lobby for legislation that benefits his constituents in the 50th District.

The governor also announced this week his State House Floor Leaders. They are Rep. Lauren McDonald (R-Cumming), Rep. Soo Hong (R-Lawrenceville), Rep. Will Wade (R-Dawsonville), and Rep. Matthew Gambill (R-Cartersville).

In making the announcements Kemp said, “In my first term we passed historic budgets and bills that benefit hardworking Georgians and families. As we enter my second term, I’m looking forward to working with these leaders to build on those achievements.”

The General Assembly’s current 40-day legislative session began on January 9.
