Officials cut the ribbon on the Hardman Heritage Trail Thursday. Gov. Nathan Deal was among the dignitaries on hand to celebrate the opening of the nearly mile-long trail.

Construction was budgeted at $1.5 million and took one year to complete. It was a joint effort by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, White County, and City of Helen.

The trail follows an old railroad bed that winds along the Chattahoochee River. It includes spots for river viewing and displays with information about the area’s native plants, animals, and history.

The Hardman Heritage Trail is open for walking, running, bicycling, skating and picnics. It is ADA/handicapped accessible. Motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters are allowed on the trail but motorized recreational vehicles are not.

Parking is located at both ends of the trail. The trail closes at dusk.
