One of Piedmont University’s most decorated distance runners has returned to lead the program. The Lions have announced the hiring of alumnus Gary Halverson as the new head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach.
Halverson, a 2024 graduate, leaves Shorter University, where he spent the past year as a graduate assistant in cross country and track & field. He also brings a USA Track & Field Level 1 Coaching Certification.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gary back to Piedmont,” said Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Dr. Remel Williams. “His passion for the sport, deep connection to our program and first-hand understanding of our student-athlete experience make him the perfect fit to lead our cross country team and assist with track & field.”
A standout runner during his time at Piedmont, Halverson served as captain of the distance squad in his senior season and set multiple school records, including marks in the 1500m, mile, 3K, 5K, 6K, DMR and 4×800. He won back-to-back Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) titles in the 1500m in 2023 and 2024, earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in both cross country and track, and picked up numerous all-conference selections.
Beyond his success on the track, Halverson was recognized for his leadership. He helped structure daily practices, mentored younger athletes, and worked to strengthen team culture.
“I’m blessed to return to a program that has helped me achieve so much as a college athlete,” Halverson said. “I’m excited to continue building on the success of the Piedmont cross country and track program.”
Halverson officially began his coaching duties in August.
