Hall County authorities have issued a warning about a new phone scam that has recently targeted individuals whose friends or family members were arrested, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Scammers are posing as deputies from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and reaching out to family members of those recently arrested. They claim to be able to assist with starting the bond process and request payment through platforms such as Apple Pay, Venmo, and Cash App.
The scammers often use names of actual deputies, which they have obtained from the department’s website or social media accounts.
Victims, believing they are helping secure their loved one’s bond, make payments to the scammer. However, the deception is often discovered when the arrestee contacts the family member directly from jail, asking for help with bond—revealing that no payment was made.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that it will never solicit bond payments over the phone. For those seeking bond amounts for specific inmates, information can be found on the HCSO website at hallcounty.policetocitizen.com/Inmates/Catalog.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious calls to the authorities.
