The Habersham County Board of Education plans to opt-out of Georgia House Bill 581 – a statewide floating homestead exemption that caps the annual increases in property values as a form of tax relief.
HB 581, approved by referendum by a majority of Habersham County voters last November, would cap homestead exempt property valuations to the inflationary rate determined by the Georgia Department of Revenue. The bill also requires the reassessments of properties every three years.
As required by law for entities that opt-out, Habersham’s School System will hold three public hearings in the board meeting room (two on Feb. 6 and another on Feb. 10) at the Central Office Annex Building, located at 144 Holcomb Street in Clarkesville.
School officials said the decision to opt-out will not affect any existing property tax exemptions for Habersham County property owners.
The first hearing will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 and a second at 4:30 p.m. that same day. The third will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10.
