Two employees of the Habersham County School System were recognized by Habersham’s Board of Education Monday, April 21, after receiving awards from Peach State Federal Credit Union for their exceptional dedication to students.

Board member Darlene Hudson first presented the Extra Mile Award to Lauren Bonner, a teacher at Level Grove Elementary School, who was nominated by her colleagues. Bonner was commended for her leadership in promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education, particularly through her recent coordination of a hands-on STEAM event.

“Lauren Bonner has consistently gone above and beyond in her commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience for our students,” Hudson said. “Her hard work and vision culminated in the planning, organization, and execution of an unforgettable event that celebrated the interdisciplinary nature of STEAM.”

The event featured interactive stations focused on technology, agriculture and mathematics, as well as student-led engineering projects. Families participated together in activities designed to foster collaboration, curiosity and learning.

In addition to her work on the STEAM event, Bonner has led the Ladies of STEM Club for the past three years. The club highlights the contributions of women in STEM fields and encourages students to explore related careers and academic interests.

Habersham County Board of Education Chairman Russ Nelson then recognized another one of its standout educators, as teacher Ana Pahuamba was given the Service Above Self Award.

“Ms. Pahuamba invests time in building relationships with our students,” Nelson said during the presentation. “She encourages our Spanish-speaking students to try more English while reminding them how important both languages are. She teaches them about cultural differences in the U.S. while also celebrating their own heritage.”

Beyond the classroom, Pahuamba is known for going the extra mile – often arriving early to help students translate for their parents, reviewing Spanish grammar and introducing new vocabulary to improve communication.

“She knows how to listen like a parent, speak like a friend and share information in a professional manner,” Nelson said. “She is trusted by our staff and our families.”

Pahuamba also recently obtained U.S. citizenship – a major milestone for her and her family.

“After many steps, paperwork and studying countless hours in the area of U.S. language, U.S. history and government, Ana took the citizenship test and passed,” Nelson said. “…(she) is an inspiration to our students, faculty and staff.”
