A year after Habersham citizens began pointing out the condition of the Habersham County Killed in Action War Memorial to local media and elected officials, the memorial that stands proud in the center of Downtown Clarkesville is all but glowing.

Beginning on Sept. 3, Habersham County took over maintenance of the memorial dedicated to Habersham citizens that made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The memorial has been overlooked for years, but now, it’s finally getting the facelift it deserves.

The county has contracted with Ammons Grave Restoration, a Cleveland-based company focused on the cleaning and maintenance of graves, monuments and bronze markers. Ammons is also cleaning memorials for Habersham County leaders and veterans at the Habersham County Fairgrounds.

“The upkeep of the monument has been a topic of [discussion] for some time,” says Carolyn Gibson, Habersham County’s Public Information Officer. “The county was able to secure much-needed maintenance due to current leadership and important community partners.”

The memorial is scheduled to be cleaned every six months, and receive maintenance as needed.

“In partnership with the city of Clarkesville, we are looking to make improvements to the park as a whole,” Gibson says. “The cleaning of the memorial is the very first step in the process of improving the property.”
