Habersham girls golf takes area championship; Raiders’ Fricks qualifies for state

The Lady Raiders golf program took the Area 2-6A Championship Wednesday at Apple Mountain Golf Club in Clarkesville.

Habersham Central shot a 274 overall, finishing 26 strokes ahead of second-place Gainesville (290), while Lanier was third with a 299.

Senior Kiley Blackburn led the girls with an 84 (fourth individual), while junior Catherine Lama carded an 86 (sixth). Junior Anna DeMore (104) and senior Kelley Kastner (105) rounded out the girls’ scoring.

“I am very proud of the hard work and dedication that these girls have committed to the sport of golf,” exclaims coach Shawn Blackburn. “They have made coaching a very special experience – it is nice to see how much they have progressed over the last 3-4 years!”
For Blackburn and his girls, they had one goal they set out for this year.
“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make it to the State Tournament – we not only made it but won the Area Championship by 16 strokes over Runner-Up Gainesville,” says Blackburn. “This was a special year for girls golf at Habersham Central. “We will miss these girls in the program, but some will be moving on to play college golf.”

The Lady Raiders will advance to the 6A State Tournament on May 22-23 at Chicopee Woods Golf Club in Gainesville, hosted by Dacula.

The Raiders, although having an outstanding regular season and finishing second in the region tournament, didn’t qualify for state after their area performance. Senior leader Dawson Fricks, however, clinched a spot to the state tournament as an individual after he carded a 74 — his third mid-70s round this season at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville (shot a 74 & 77 earlier this season).

Lakeside (282), Greenbrier (294) and Gainesville (300) were the top three boys’ programs in the area tournament, all securing state tournament team bids.

Fricks had another solid outing, finishing just six strokes behind low medalist Clay Grantham of Lakeside (68). His performance bodes well, as he’ll play the same course for the state tournament.
