Habersham County votes down T-SPLOST, approves Sunday liquor sales

Voters who went to the wrong precinct were allowed to cast paper provisional ballots.

Habersham County voters Tuesday defeated a proposed special local option sales tax to fund transportation projects.

The proposed 1% tax was projected to raise just over $35 million over five years to pay for roads, bridges, and airport projects. The measure was defeated by an 1,149 vote margin – 7,829 (54%) to 6,680 (46%).

Voters overwhelmingly approved Sunday liquor by the drink sales in Habersham. The measure passed with 9,385 votes (65%) to 5,503 (37%).

Clarkesville voters went to the polls Tuesday to elect a new council member. Roxie Barron claimed a decisive victory over Melvin Cash. Barron won the Post 2 Clarkesville Council seat with 76% of the vote.

And in Alto, voters said ‘yes’ to alcohol package sales. The measure passed, 91 votes (57%) to 69 (43%).
