A Habersham County sheriff’s deputy escaped injury Thursday evening when he wrecked his patrol car while responding to an emergency call.
The single-vehicle wreck happened around 6:40 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the intersection of GA 365 and Alto Mud Creek Road.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the deputy was southbound in the right lane in a marked patrol car with the emergency equipment activated. The driver of an SUV traveling in front of the deputy began to brake, apparently to yield to the oncoming patrol car.
The deputy swerved to avoid hitting the SUV. The patrol car traveled across the left southbound lane into the grass median, where it struck the cable barrier.
“After the initial impact, the patrol car traveled back across all lanes of Georgia 365 and onto the west shoulder,” the State Patrol report says.
The patrol car struck the metal guardrail on the driver’s side and rear bumper before coming to a stop.
“The sheriff’s office vehicle sustained cosmetic damage but remains operable and was driven from the scene once the Georgia State Patrol concluded its investigation,” says county public information officer Rob Moore.
The deputy, who was unhurt, was able to complete his duty shift, says Moore.
The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office refused to release the deputy’s name. The sheriff’s office also denied an open records request for the dashcam footage and referred all information requests to GSP.
