Habersham County Schools will operate on 2-hour delay Jan. 16

After an unexpected four-day winter break due to Winter Storm Cora, Habersham County students are heading back to class on Thursday.

Wednesday afternoon, county school superintendent Matthew Cooper said road conditions have improved, “but there are still concerns with buses running in the dark in some areas of the county.”

According to the superintendent, the school transportation department is “comfortable” running buses on most roads on a 2-hour delay on Jan. 16. However, he added that buses “will not run on some roads due to unthawed ice.” The parents of students living on those affected routes will be contacted by their child’s bus driver today (Jan. 15).

Cooper said Habersham County Schools will be open on Friday, either on a delayed or regular schedule.

“As superintendent, I am very happy to have our students back in school tomorrow,” he said. “Most of our parents have been very understanding of the situation we faced this week. For this, I am grateful.”
