Threat of black ice causes area schools to close, delay classes

Students and teachers in several North Georgia counties will get the day off on Friday.

Schools are closed Feb. 21 in at least sixteen North Georgia counties due to the threat of black ice and possible poor road conditions. Several other school systems are delaying their classes to give roadways time to improve.

UPDATED List of area closings, cancellations, and delays

Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper says delaying classes in Habersham “would do us no good” because temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until 10 a.m.

Another day off from school

Friday will be the second day off from school for many of the students. Nine North Georgia counties called off class Thursday because of a winter weather advisory.

At Tallulah Falls School in north Habersham, students got an extra treat – two days tacked onto their already planned winter break. TFS students won’t return to class until March 2.

Snow arrives late

Initial forecasts had the snow arriving in Habersham County Thursday morning but it didn’t show until mid-afternoon. When it did, it was lovely. Huge fluffy snowflakes fell across Habersham and surrounding areas.

Many Now Habersham readers commented on the snow and shared pictures and videos on social media.

A winter weather advisory that was in effect for the northernmost counties in Georgia was lifted late Thursday. Still, forecasters warn widespread black ice will likely develop overnight into Friday as temperatures fall into the teens and 20s behind the storm.
