Two dogs came into contact with a rabid raccoon in Clarkesville this week, according to Habersham County Animal Care and Control (HCACC).
HCACC Director Madi Hawkins Nix says the incident occurred January 9 on Richland Terrace.
“Officer Mitchael Jenkins responded to the scene and retrieved the deceased raccoon which was submitted to the Health Department for rabies testing,” Nix says.
On January 11, HCACC received confirmation that the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus. “Both canines involved were current on rabies vaccinations and will be in a 45 day home observation,” says Nix.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in the county for the new year.
HCACC urges pet owners to make sure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.
