Habersham County public school students and staff will not return to the classroom on Wednesday as planned. School has been cancelled due to the weather. Schools already were closed for winter break.
Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper made the announcement shortly after 5:30pm Tuesday. It was welcome news to many still struggling without electricity and fearful of driving.
Winter Storm Octavia dumped up to a half inch of ice on northeast Georgia Monday leaving tens of thousands of northeast Georgians without power. Though much of the ice melted today the water left behind is expected to re-freeze overnight creating dangerous driving conditions.
