During its regular meeting on Monday, April 21, the Habersham County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed April 2025 as Donate Life Month, joining a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donation.
The proclamation was read aloud by Commissioner Kelly Woodall at the request of Vice-Chairman Bruce Harkness. The statement emphasized the life-saving impact of donation and recognized the selfless acts of donors and their families.
“Donating life is the ultimate act of generosity and kindness,” the proclamation read, noting that more than 100,000 people across the country—including nearly 3,000 Georgians—are currently waiting for organ transplants. In 2024, a record-setting 48,149 transplants were performed nationwide, including 1,460 in Georgia, thanks to 24,020 donors.
The proclamation also recognized the ongoing work of LifeLink® of Georgia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to organ and tissue recovery. Commissioners applauded its mission to “honor donors and save lives” and encouraged citizens to register as donors.
Currently, nearly 3.8 million Georgians have joined the donor registry, which is accessible through www.donatelifegeorgia.org, driver’s license offices, and through the Department of Natural Resources when obtaining hunting or fishing licenses.
By declaring April as Donate Life Month, the commission hopes to highlight the ongoing need for donation and inspire more residents to become registered donors, offering hope and healing to those in need.
