As Amy Hulsey watched her daughter Haley take the stage in Athens this weekend, she couldn’t help but remember her own time in the same spotlight two decades past. “I wanted to jump in the alto section and start singing my heart out!”
Haley was among nine Habersham County students chosen to perform as part of this year’s All State Chorus at the Classic Center. The annual event provides Georgia choral students the opportunity to rehearse and perform with their peers from around the state who also demonstrate advanced singing skills and to work with a renowned conductor. “Students’ musical talents are truly multiplied,” Amy explains, “they are developed and refined at such events as All State Chorus.”
Amy (when she was Amy Higgins) was among the chosen from Habersham Central High School in the 1980s and says the experience and education All State provides is priceless. “So many of my friends I met at All State from across Georgia now have musical professions, whether in a school system or church, and I know the beginning of their love for singing and music developed at All State Chorus years ago.”
The same is true for Amy. She’s been working as a pianist in our community since 1997 and bringing that musical legacy full circle with Haley was a proud moment. “I am so thrilled my daughter can experience such a remarkable musical event and have these memories, too. Hearing the wonderful sounds they were making from the amazing teaching of their All State directors made me so thankful that All State Chorus is still around today for these students.”
