Habersham County has temporarily closed the lap pool at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center near Clarkesville. A mechanical issue is making the water cloudy, obstructing the lifeguards’ view.
“Unfortunately, it’s affecting the visibility of the water,” Habersham County Recreation Department Director Brooke Whitmire says. “Our lifeguards need to be able to see the people in the water and if the visibility gets to the point where that’s no longer safe and we don’t feel like we’re able to do that to the best of our ability, then we need to shut it down until we can get something fixed with that.”
She stresses, “Safety is our top priority.”
The lap pool was closed Tuesday afternoon and will remain closed until further notice, pending repairs. County officials are working to correct the issue as quickly as possible and will continue to communicate updates, a news release states.
The problem is not impacting the smaller recreation/therapy pool inside the natatorium at the aquatic center.
“The rec pool is not affected by this at all,” says Whitmire. “It’s fine. That’s going to stay open so people can come use it.”
