Habersham County voters could head back to the polls early this year to decide who will fill the District 5 county commission seat left vacant by Tim Stamey. Commissioners have the option to call a special election on September 21 or wait until the general election on November 2.
Stamey resigned from the commission on April 19, citing health reasons. He was first elected to the board in December 2019 after winning a special election to fill the unexpired term of Ed Nichols who also resigned from the board.
Stamey was reelected to a full four-year term last year. His successor will fill out the remainder of that unexpired term, which ends December 30, 2024.
“Commissioner Stamey has served Habersham County well and we are all wishing him the best as he focuses on his health,” said Habersham County Manager Phil Sutton.
County commissioners are expected to set the date for the special election at their next meeting.
