Habersham Commission elects new chairman

The Habersham County Board of Commissioners held its first meeting of the new year on Monday and elected among themselves a new chairman.

County Attorney Donnie Hunt held the nominations for the commission for the new officers of the board. Hunt opened the floor for nominations for chairman. Commissioner Bruce Harkness nominated Commissioner Jimmy Tench. With no further nominations for the position, the board closed the nomination period. With no additional nominations, the board elected Tench as the Chairman of the Habersham County Board of Commissioners.

After the vote, former Chairman Ty Akins exchanged seats with Tench. Akins had served as chairman for two years.

Hunt asked for nominations for Vice-Chairman among the board of commissioners. Commissioner Dustin Mealor nominated Harkness for the position. With no further nominations for the position, the board closed the nomination period. With no additional nominations, the board elected Harkness as the Vice-Chairman of the Habersham County Board of Commissioners. He now begins his fourth year in that role.

Harkness thanked the commission for their support. “Thank you gentlemen for putting your faith in me and your trust in me again to re-elect me to be your vice-chairman,” he said. “I promise to do my best and work hard to support you all and work for the best interest of the citizens and the employees.”

After the meeting, Tench was asked how he felt about being elected as chairman? “It feels good that they trust me that much but I have a few reservations,” he said. For Tench, he said that being chairman “was an experience.”
