Habersham Christian Learning Center (HCLC) announces a new staff member and other grants and changes made before fall classes begin. Sarah Harrison, the Executive Director of the HCLC, has announced the addition of new staff member Celeste Sumner to serve as the Administrative Assistant. Sumner is a transplant to Georgia from Lisbon, Ohio, and looks forward to meeting more people in Habersham through her work at HCLC.
According to Harrison, Sumner’s hiring is just one of many exciting things taking place as HCLC gets ready for fall classes. Harrison shared that many community members and businesses, especially Papa John’s in Cornelia and Brownies by Faith, have partnered with HCLC as drop off locations for cleaning supplies. Donations of cleaning supplies can be dropped off at Papa John’s in Cornelia. With a donation of $10 worth of supplies, Assistant Manager and HCLC alum Erric Adams is offering a free small one-topping pizza. Faith Baird of Brownies by Faith is an HCLC alum as well. Cleaning supplies can also be dropped off at her pop-up shop on Fridays. Donors receive a free HCLC t-shirt. Faith’s yummy brownies are available, too!
In addition, HCLC has received two gifts to help them set up for fall classes. First, Truett McConnell University donated a used SmartBoard for one of HCLC’s classrooms. Volunteer Jonathan Cantrell installed it. Second, HCLC received a $500 COVID-19 relief grant from the Habersham County United Way to use to prepare classrooms and cleaning routines. Staff is experimenting with PVC pipes and clear shower curtains to provide social distancing in the classrooms.
Students arriving this month will see additional improvements outside the building. Thomas Construction upgraded the front area for buses and even checked back to make sure the grading and gravel held up during the recent heavy rainstorms. Harrison shared that HCLC has applied for two additional grants to help fund the remainder of the front area project, which includes $7,300 for a concrete bus pad and $25,000 to pave the entire driveway. It will take about two months before HCLC will hear about the possibility of receiving this funding.
Students who are already registered for a course at HCLC this fall are encouraged to complete the required application form available on the HCLC website on the parent’s tab before classes begin. The application is required on the first day of class and must have a parent’s signature.
