A new initiative through the partnership of the Habersham Chamber of Commerce and Latin American Chamber of Commerce (LACC) is taking shape to help connect the area’s diverse Hispanic business community.

A recent brainstorming work session explored ideas to promote accessibility for established Latino-owned businesses in Habersham County through equal access to available economic and public policy opportunities that could foster, improve and boost the Latin American business population, in addition to delivering culturally and linguistically relevant training programs.

The work session was a result of the partnership formed with the LACC in 2021 to help Northeast Georgia’s Latino community find the resources they need to grow and develop businesses, while educating and empowering Latin American business owners and professionals.

“This is the first of many work sessions that will include several community ‘champions’ to help identify the challenges faced in our area, and create opportunities for education and awareness,” said Mary Beth Horton, Habersham Chamber President. She said the partnership is not about bringing in new chamber members. “The goal is about making sure more of our Latino businesses have equal access to resources, and to be vital to all businesses to promote economic grown and enhance the quality of life.”

Members of both Chambers, local leaders from City Of Cornelia, Piedmont University, Georgia Power Company Habersham Medical Center, Partnership Habersham Economic Development, as well as local Latino business owners, Camille Viera-Hewell Tax Services, Raspas El Tigre and Jack Bradley Insurance participated in the work session.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Habersham County Chamber, and also very excited with the positive response from community leaders, the goal is to work with the HCCC and other partners to support the growth and development of Latino Businesses to benefit the economic prosperity of the region,” said Alejandro Coss, President and CEO of the Latin American Chamber of Commerce.

The next work session will be held on Tuesday, April 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cornelia Fire Department Training room. If you are interested in attending, please contact Mary Beth Horton at [email protected] or Maria Peck at [email protected].
