Habersham Central High School is among Georgia’s 2020 AP Honor Schools, according to an announcement made by the state Department of Education.
“I commend the students, teachers, and staff of these 255 schools,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods. “Behind this recognition is an enormous amount of hard work, and I congratulate all those who worked to expand access, improve performance, and build strong Advanced Placement programs in each school recognized.”
Habersham Central earned honors in AP HUMANITIES and AP STEM in recognition of the number of AP courses offered within each discipline, according to a press release issued by the school.
The school also earned distinction in AP HUMANITIES Achievement (70 schools) and AP STEM Achievement (94 schools) in recognition of students earning a 3 or higher on at least 50% of all Humanities and STEM AP exams.
Last year, 280 Habersham County students took 426 AP exams with 65.5% of HCHS students earning a score of 3 or above. Habersham Central students took exams in 23 subject areas, 18 of which were courses offered at HCHS and five of which were completed through GA Virtual School.
Habersham Central students earned 42 AP Scholar awards, 17 AP Scholar with Honor awards, and 16 AP Scholar with Distinction awards. Eight students earned the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma.
HCHS Principal Jonathan Stribling says being named an AP Honor School speaks to the school system’s commitment to offer students a “rigorous, competitive AP curriculum that will give our talented students an advantage in the college application process.” He adds, it’s a testament to the “intellects and abilities of our students and faculty.”
