As the Habersham County School System approaches the end of its fifth education special purpose local option sales tax, the school board is preparing to ask voters to approve another one. The Habersham County Board of Education meets tonight and is expected to authorize and approve a resolution calling for a referendum on ESPLOST 6.
If the board approves, the referendum would go before voters this fall.
In 2016, 65% of Habersham County voters passed the current ESPLOST. The 5-year, penny-on-the-dollar tax is one of two sales tax funding mechanisms the Habersham County School System has in place; the other is LOST.
Habersham Schools receive two percent of the county’s seven percent sales tax while the county and its seven municipalities share one percent of sales tax proceeds. The remainder goes to the state.

Also during tonight’s meeting, the school board will recognize the recipients of the Peach State Federal Credit Union Extra Mile Award and Service Above Self Award. These awards recognize Habersham School teachers and staff who go “above and beyond” to improve the lives of students.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14 in the BOE meeting room at the school administration office building in Clarkesville.
