The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam it says is “running rampant” in the county.
According to a post on the HCSO’s Facebook page, the phone caller tells you that you have serious legal allegations against your name and need to call 941-363-2535 before you are placed under custody by the local police.
“This is a scam,” the post reads. Law enforcement “will not call you and threaten you with arrest,” it says.
The post ends with a request for members of the public to “Please tell your family, friends, and neighbors.”
