Habersham County’s Board of Education is taking a closer look at school security through possible adoption of a new crisis alert system.

The newly-proposed security measures were presented at a work session Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The consideration for enhanced security by board members comes about six weeks after a school shooting at Apalachee High School left four dead and nine injured.

During Tuesday’s session, school officials briefly discussed implementing a new remote alert system called Centegix, which would provide every staff member a badge that could notify police of potential threats and lock down a school building within seconds.

The system, credited with saving lives during the Sept. 4 incident at Apalachee, was also approved by White County’s School System earlier this month.

If approved in Habersham, around $189,800 would be allocated from Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds to install Centegix across all campuses systemwide.

Additional yearly fees could be included in the cost if the item is passed by board members at next week’s regular meeting. That meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at 144 Holcomb St. in Clarkesville.

As requested, Now Habersham sent an email to school officials for additional details on the proposal Tuesday evening. This article will be updated as those details are released.
