Former Hab Central golfer Lee McCoy succeeding in PGA Tour Canada

Former Habersham Central standout golfer Lee McCoy made national headlines back in 2014 when he bested the world’s number one golfer (Jordan Spieth) in the Valspar Championship in 2016.

McCoy wasn’t able to collect the winnings in that tournament at the time, as documented in our story last year.

The former 4A State Champion back in 2012, McCoy went on to a very successful career at the University of Georgia, leaving as one of the top golfers in UGA history.

He has since had some good breaks and bad ones. In November 2016, a car crash left McCoy’s wrist shattered in two places, keeping him off the links for some time. The injury came just after he made his first-ever PGA tour cut November 6 of last year at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open, an event that saw him finish 8-under-par, tied for 41st.

He returned to action in March 2017 at the Valspar Championship — yes, the same place he once bested Spieth with a fourth-place finish — and shot a six-over, leaving him tied for 65th. In that respect, he’s 2-for-2 in PGA Tour events in making the cut this year.

McCoy has played in a number of PGA Tour Canada (Mackenzie Tour) events in 2017.

On June 4, McCoy won the Freedom 55 Financial Open, finishing 20-under par and collecting $31,500. A week later he tied for 42nd in the Bayview Place Cardtronics Open presented by Times Colonist, cashing in on just $700 while finishing 2-under. McCoy’s most recent match was June 18, when he closed the GolfBC Championship with a 12-under-par four-day performance, which netted him $4,050 with his 9th-place finish.

In his three events in PGA Tour Canada, McCoy has a win and a pair of top-ten finishes, and has made $36,250. While not having the optimal outcome in his two PGA tour events, he still made the cut for both and also was able to make $36,267 — almost exactly what he’s made for PGA Tour Canada.

McCoy teed off on Thursday afternoon in The Players Cup (Mackenzie Tour), where he’ll look to notch another top-ten finish.
