The 1950’s romantic comedy Guys and Dolls is a musical that focuses on the unlikely pairing of gambler Nathan Detroit and Hot Box showgirl Miss Adelaide, along with crap game manager Sky Masterson and missionary Sarah Brown.

Their lives get turned upside down as their own needs and desires collide center stage.

Miss Adelaide wants nothing more than to live a simple life with Nathan, but his determination to find a location to hold crap games causes tension between the two. Missionary Sarah Brown is looking for a way to get more people interested in the word of God, but when the shady Sky Masterson walks into her life she doesn’t know how to deal with his quick advances. Set in 1950’s Manhattan these two couples must decide how far they are willing to go to get what they want.

The Director’s Vision

When asked about his vision for Guys and Dolls Director Bill Gabelhausen gets a nostalgic look on his face. “I want the show to feel like ‘Old School Broadway’. My primary focus for this show is to not think about how I can bring the show to a contemporary audience, but how I can bring the contemporary audience to the world of Broadway in the 50’s. Dolls is a pillar of musical theatre history and we will pay homage to this fact by revisiting classical musical theatre style to remain true to the original form of its 1950 Broadway premiere.”

Techie Talk
Henry Johnson, Set Designer

Professor Henry Johnson is thrilled to get his hands on Guy and Dolls. “My job as set designer is to translate the Director’s vision for the play into scenery.

Since Bill wants to transport the audience to 1950’s Broadway, we will be staging the show much like it was for the premiere. We will fly painted back drops in and out to indicate changes in location and will utilize rolling wagons to create interior rooms or more intimate locations.”
