An incident involving a barricaded gunman in Winder ended peacefully after seven hours. The standoff began Friday night at about 10 p.m., according to a news release from the Winder Police Department.
Patrick Ramon Cole, 50, had a dispute with his wife, which escalated, according to police. Cole attempted to prevent her from using her phone to call for help. When police were notified and on their way, “Cole went into his residence, indicating verbally he would not go peacefully if the police came,” the release states.
Police said that when officers arrived, Cole refused to come out of the residence or make any contact with them.
Due to weapons known to be located inside with Cole and the statements he made, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was called in.
Officials obtained arrest and search warrants.
According to Winder PD, during the standoff, Cole periodically appeared with a pistol in his hands, shouting for the officers to leave. He surrendered to the SWAT team at about 5:30 a.m. on June 8 and was taken to the Barrow County Detention Center.
“I would like to express my appreciation to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and other deputies for their response and committed and determined efforts throughout the night to help bring this dangerous incident to the best possible conclusion for all persons to be safe,” said Winder Police Chief Jim Fullington
Police charged Cole with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, simple battery family violence, simple assault family violence, and 2nd-degree criminal damage to property.
