Gugel leads Lions in final round of West Pines Collegiate

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – Piedmont men’s golf concluded play at the West Pines Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon in Douglasville, Georgia.

The Lions had a few holes to play in their second round before turning over and beginning the final round.

Sophomore Doug Gugel delivered his best round of the fall to lead the team in the final round, carding a 1-under 70 highlighted by three birdies in a row on holes 7-9. Gugel took advantage of the par 5’s, making birdie on three of the four on the course. His strong final round pushed him into the top 20 as he took home a T-17th place finish.

As a team, the Lions delivered the best round of the event in the final round, with a +9 round of 293 to move up a spot to 12th out of 20 teams.

Cam Lucas also delivered his best round of the fall, with an even par 71 to jump 20 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 33rd. Lucas made a total of three birdies on his round, second to Gugel in the final round.

Adam Rogers carded a 4-over 75, his best round of the 54-hole event.  Jacob DeJesus also improved from Monday, delivering a 6-over 77 for Piedmont’s final counting score.

After leading the team through the first two rounds, Connor Lane made two birdies but slid back with a non-counting 81.

Host team Oglethorpe took home the team title by five strokes over Lynchburg.

The Stormy Petrels’ Jackson Hiller claimed the individual title at -5, one stroke ahead of three others.

Up next, the Lions will conclude the fall at the Chick-fil-A Invitational in Rome, beginning Monday, October 21.
