A groundbreaking ceremony was Monday for the new Habersham County Airport terminal building. The terminal is part of a multi-million dollar upgrade to the county’s airport. Other upgrades include construction/extension of a parallel taxi-way and additional hanger space.
The airport was opened in 1969. Upgrading the nearly 50-year-old airport is part of the county’s overall economic plan.
“Our goal is to become more of a corporate and recreational airport,” Habersham County’s Director of Planning and Development Mike Beecham recently told Georgia Trend magazine. “Our runway is 5,500 feet long, and that length is adequate for most corporate jets.”
The Habersham County Airport averages about 60 operations a day with 60% of the business being local and about 40% being transient, according to the county’s website. It’s located next to the county’s newly expanded Airport Industrial Park and is the closest airport to one of the region’s top tourist destinations, Helen, Georgia.
The Habersham County Airport is located at 1112 W. Airport Road Off Hwy. 441 Bypass Cornelia, GA 30531.
