After another brief round of qualifying, it appears Cornelia Ward 2 Commissioner Janice Griggs will be returning to the city commission next year.

Griggs was the only one to qualify for the post. She faces no opposition, unless someone submits their name as a write-in candidate.

No one filed to run during the initial round of qualifying, prompting Griggs to seek reelection. According to election officials, she filed the necessary paperwork to run during the abbreviated qualifying period, which ran from August 25 to 26.

Incumbent Ward 3 Commissioner Don Bagwell is the only other Cornelia candidate up for election this year. He, too, is running unopposed.

According to Habersham County Elections Superintendent Laurel Ellison, if no write-in candidates qualify, Griggs and Bagwell will be considered duly elected, and Cornelia’s municipal elections in November will be canceled.

The same holds for four candidates in Mount Airy who are all running unopposed.

The deadline for write-in candidates to qualify in Mount Airy is noon on Friday, August 29. The deadline in Cornelia is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2.
