Either I was a very good girl this year, I requested the perfect gifts, or my friends and family know me very well. Maybe it’s a combination of all of the above but Christmas was magical for me this year. It always is really because I’m like a kid at heart.
I’m so excited I just had to share with you what awaited me under the tree. Whether you have a green thumb, enjoy working in the yard, or know someone who does, these are wonderful ideas to add to your 2021 list.
I received not one but two beautiful red glass hummingbird feeders. Remember the hummingbird story from September? Humming Along in the Garden – Now Habersham It featured my friend, Sam Ruffner, who attracts 100’s of hummers to his backyard each year. I said then I would work on adding more hummer visits and additional feeders will really help in that effort. Many thanks to my sister, Angela, and niece, Jennifer, for these feeders to add to the two I already own.
Although I try to buy from local nurseries when flower shopping, I’ve occasionally ordered plants that I know I can’t find including some unique daylilies, Siberian irises, and hostas. My ‘go to’ catalog is Gilbert H. Wild. Their selection is incredible and their pricing tends to be budget friendly. I’m looking forward to their new spring catalog to see what treasures I will find with the gift certificate from Angela. I can assure you I will stretch that $25 a long way. I love perennials. They are the gift that keeps on giving!
I can’t remember a single Christmas that I haven’t been gifted a gardening book. I love books and I love gardening so it’s a ‘no brainer’ for anyone who is buying a gift for me for Christmas, my birthday, or any other occasion. When it’s cold outside, too cold to work outdoors, I love settling inside and perusing a new gardening book. My best, good friend, Andy Still, sent me The Gardener’s Botanical, an encyclopedia of Latin plant names.
Not only is Andy a good friend but one of the best writers I know. I credit him with any writing ability or success I have today. Thank you Andy for being a friend for more than 40 years, my mentor, and for such a thoughtful gift that embraces my love of gardening. You are Still the One!
Last but not least my sweet son, Robert, surprised me with something I’ve wanted and asked for all year long…a hedge trimmer. I was over the moon and had tears in my eyes when I unwrapped it. I can hardly wait to charge it and rev it up. It will be put to good use on some shrubs and hedges that have gotten out of control in my back yard. Love you much Robert!
After some frigid weather in the past few days, these Christmas gifts are a reminder of warmer days ahead and hours of fulfillment come spring. I’m very blessed to have friends and family who understand and nurture my love for gardening. I love you all more than I can say!
