Grand jury indicts Mount Airy woman for involuntary manslaughter

Kayla Parker

The Habersham County Grand Jury this week indicted a Mount Airy woman for involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Toccoa man.

Kayla Marie Parker was initially charged with murder in last year’s death of Joshua Matthew Canady. The 37-year-old Canady died on January 19, 2020, after being stabbed.

According to the five-count indictment against her, Parker unintentionally caused Canady’s death by delaying calling for medical assistance for him. Prosecutors allege Parker involved her two minor children in “altering the scene of his injury and staging evidence of a physical attack on her.”

The Grand Jury also indicted Parker on two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree, concealing a death, and tampering with evidence.

Parker, 32, pleaded not guilty to the charges. A trial date has not yet been set.
