The government funding stalemate and the resulting government shutdown have hit home in Cleveland.
City Manager Kevin Harris told the city council earlier this week that even though they opened bids for the construction of the city’s new wastewater treatment plant, they have halted all action on the project due to the fact that the city has been awarded $17.9 million in federal funds, with an additional $1 million from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Harris said, “With the federal government involved, we don’t want to take any chances.” He shared with the council that if the shutdown ends soon, they could bring a recommendation to the council by their next meeting on October 20th.
Harris did say that the city has received three bids for the project, but did not want to make a recommendation until the situation with the federal government has been resolved.
In addition to the two other funding sources, the city will still need to provide $2.2 million in local funds for the project.
The latest project’s estimated cost is over $21 million.
