Gov. Kemp welcomes applications for U.S. Senate

ATLANTA – Today Governor Brian P. Kemp encouraged all qualified Georgians who want to serve in the U.S. Senate to submit their applications online.

“To ensure an open and transparent appointment process, I am encouraging all Georgians who want to serve in the U.S. Senate to submit their name and qualifications,” said Governor Kemp. “We will carefully vet the applicants and choose a person who best reflects our values, our state, and our vision for the future.”

The Governor’s Office says it will release additional details “at the appropriate time.”

In August, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson announced his decision to resign from public office due to his health. He has Parkinson’s disease and recently underwent surgery to remove a tumor. His resignation is effective at the end of this year.

Gov. Kemp will appoint an interim successor. That person will serve for 10 months until November 3, 2020, when a special election will be held to fill the remainder of Isakson’s unexpired term.

Anyone seeking to be appointed or elected to the U.S. Senate must be at least 30 years old. The Constitution also requires them to have been a U.S. citizen for at least nine years and they must live in the state they seek to represent.
