Tropical Storm Idalia is nearing hurricane strength as it approaches Western Cuba. As the storm develops, forecasters say life-threatening storm surge and dangerous winds are becoming increasingly likely for portions of Florida.

Idalia is forecast to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane along the Florida Big Bend on Wednesday morning. Meteorologists expect it will then weaken to a Category 1 hurricane as the center moves into far southeast Georgia later on Wednesday.

Ahead of the storm, Florida emergency management officials have issued evacuation orders for counties along the Gulf Coast. In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday mobilized the state’s operation center to prepare for any potential impact from Idalia.

“Rest assured, though the system will likely weaken before crossing our border, we’re not taking anything for granted,” Kemp said in a news release.

The operation center includes Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency teams that will monitor forecasts to anticipate any changes affecting the state.

Georgia residents are encouraged to also keep an eye out on the weather to quickly make any necessary preparations.
