Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency Monday for three southwest Georgia counties hit hard by violent weekend storms.
The storms were part of the same system that spawned an EF-4 tornado in Lee County, Alabama that killed 23 people.
Storms destroyed about two dozen homes in Grady, Harris, and Talbot counties. They also damaged around 40 other homes and several businesses. The AJC reports there were about 3,000 power outages in the area by mid-morning Monday.
The storm injured some people but did not kill anyone in Georgia.
Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service in Atlanta indicates that Talbot and Harris counties sustained damage consistent with at least an EF-2 tornado. That brings to four the number of confirmed tornados that struck across the southeast on Sunday.
Kemp said the damage in Georgia likely isn’t severe enough to qualify for federal disaster aid but added it’s still too soon to tell.
