An evening of music, history, and a cemetery walk
Join supporters of the Old Clarkesville Cemetery on May 18 for what promises to be a memorable evening.
Historic Clarkesville Cemetery Preservation, Inc. is hosting a festive picnic on the grounds of Grace-Calvary Episcopal Church, starting at 6 p.m., with several highlights built into the evening’s schedule of events. “The season lends itself to outdoor dining. We invite you to bring a picnic meal and plan to dress up a small table or blanket with candles and flowers,” said Clarkesville Mayor Barrie Aycock, who chairs HCCP, Inc.
Organizers hope the community will come out to savor the evening but also to learn more about local history and the ongoing preservation and restoration efforts at the cemetery.
The event’s title, Gloaming Supper, is a nod to Jarvis Van Buren and his wife Eliza, who are buried in the Old Clarkesville Cemetery. The couple built historic Gloaming Cottage, located near the cemetery. Jarvis Van Buren was an architect/builder and horticulturist who migrated from New York to Habersham County in 1838. He is credited with designing and building several historic homes and buildings in the area.
The event will feature a performance by the Georgia Mudcats, a history talk and a candlelight walking tour of the cemetery.
“The Mudcats, a group of four talented musicians who play fiddle, bass, banjo and guitar and sing traditional Appalachian and Irish folk music, will add a festive spirit to our gathering,” Aycock said. “They played together regularly in the early 2000s, often for events at Glen-Ella Springs Inn; they are coming together for this performance as a special treat.”
Ample parking is available at Grace-Calvary, located at the corner of Wilson and Green streets just around the corner from the cemetery. Iced tea and water will be provided. Tickets prices are $25/person or $40/couple, and are on sale now.
