After a most challenging, pandemic plagued season, Georgia high school football comes down to this week. Sixteen teams will play for the state championships in their respective classes.
The 2020 GHSA-Tommy Guillebeau State Football Championships will be held December 28-30 at Georgia State University’s Center Parc Stadium. All games, including the first-ever girls’ Flag Football championships, will be televised live on Georgia Public Broadcasting and streamed at GPB.org/sports and NFHSNetwork.com.
Two of the sixteen teams competing in this year’s championships are returning champs – Buford and Irwin County. Irwin seeks to hold onto its title in a matchup against Brooks County at 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, Dec. 28. Buford faces Lee County in the 6A final at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Other regional games of interest include Trinity Christian versus Prince Avenue Christian of Athens; Pierce County against Oconee County; and Marist versus Jefferson.

The is the first time the Jefferson Dragons have been back in the finals since 2012. It’s the team’s first trip to the finals under head coach Gene Cathcart who took over the program in 2017.
Cathcart, who from 2005-07 led the Habersham Central Raiders to three straight playoff trips and two region titles, recently shared with GPB sports how honored he feels to play in the final game of the season.
The Jefferson Dragons will play the Marist War Eagles in the Class 4A final at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29. You can watch all of the action live on GPB Sports.
